“Something Tells Me” - BAILEN
There’s something about sibling bands that have a special sound. Whether it’s the shared DNA or the obvious talent that runs in the family, BAILEN is no exception to special sibling bands. A pair of twins and their younger sister make up the indie (with hints of modern folk and classic rock) trio. Raised by their classically trained parents, these siblings had their fair share of exposure to a diverse record collection, inspiring them to create their own sound.
“Go Greta” - Sunstroke Rain
Sunstroke Rain will soon be a Swedish staple (if I could have it my way.) Their unique sound pulls listeners into an electronic-disco trance with lyrics to compliment, not overpower. The group is led by frontwoman Karin Turesson and backed by Olivia Lyne and Lisa Frisk. Sunstroke Rain is Turesson’s personal project after working with artists like Nina Persson and Robyn.
“Don’t Worry” - Scoobert Doobert
If his name doesn’t give it away, Scoobert Doobert is a bit of a goof, a class clown if you will. And while his music has feel good and bouncy vibes, it packs a punch. Like other indie artists, Scoobert currently has a flair of 80’s groove that compliments the modern lyrical style. Although “Don’t Worry” has all the elements of a basic indie pop-rock song, Scoobert’s talented writing skills and playful text painting with the instrumental takes it to the next level.
“Old Black Mold” - Dick Aven
Hailing from Franklin, Tennessee, Dick Aven is growing something special. No, not black mold, unless you want to get very literal. Aven is cultivating a combination of feel good indie folk and angsty modern rock to create music for roadtrippers, back-yard partiers, those who like to dance while doing dishes, and everyone who falls in between. For more insight into his music, Aven shared that he likes “experimental music. Not too keen on experimental drugs though,” a great message for our younger readers.
“Money Back” - JD Eicher
The versatile JD Eicher is currently picking up steam as a singer/songwriter who has got something to say. With a timeless writing style similar to the likes of Maroon 5 and Andy Grammer, Eicher has a flair of originality in his genre crossing tunes. Because of his ability to blur the lines of pop, R&B, and country, Eicher’s music caters to all.
“Alcanzar” - Verena
Of the dozens of artists currently making waves at CU Denver, Verena is someone who stuck out to me when I first heard her sonorous voice in our Performance Practice class. Not only is her voice ever so pleasing to the ear, she captivates audiences with her bubbly personality and genuine passion for performing. Even through a pair of headphones, you can truly hear Verena’s dedication and love for the music she makes. She obviously didn't need to be in that Performance Practice class as much as I did.
“damn Right” - AUDREY NUNA
Up and coming artist AUDREY NUNA is the definition of “swagger.” At a mere 20 years old, she has racked up over a million streams on Spotify, collaborated with Grammy nominated rapper Jack Harlow, and has a cool Instagram (she really can do it all.) The Korean artist is a genre bending aficionado, melding trap, R&B, rap, and hints of K-pop to create a unique sound we’ve never heard before.
“Arms Length” - Annie Oakley
I had the pleasure of discovering this identical twin sister duo last fall at a socially distanced outdoor concert. From the second their voices lifted together in memorizing harmony, I was hooked on Annie Oakley. The twins originally hail from Oklahoma, making the bold move to Northern Colorado during the pandemic which proves they are a force to be reckoned with.
